The molecular composition of natural gas is simple: just 4 atoms of hydrogen bonded to 1 atom of carbon. This chemical makeup allows natural gas to be environmentally-friendly and incredibly versatile, serving every possible commercial business genre in the United States.

In a recently published report by the American Gas Association (AGA) , they found out just how important natural gas is when it comes to satisfying the energy needs of the commercial sector.

The AGA report defined the “commercial sector” as all businesses that don’t fall under residential, manufacturing or agricultural classifications. This distinction is very important because the energy needs of the commercial sector differ greatly from the energy needs of the other segments.

Essential Commercial Building Upgrades on the Horizon

By focusing solely on the commercial sector, the AGA report shed light on building characteristics unique to this sector. For example, the report revealed that a surprising 50 percent of the commercial buildings were built prior to 1980 and 20 percent of buildings were constructed since 2000. This means that buildings are long overdue for some significant upgrades, a key growth opportunity to incorporate natural gas appliances and equipment into these commercial sector buildings.

Natural Gas Proves to be a Huge Money Saver for Businesses

This AGA report also found that energy costs for the commercial sector that utilize natural gas as a main energy source are at historical lows. Findings from this research revealed that the average price commercial customers paid for natural gas in 2016 dropped to the lowest level since 1975, driven largely by significant domestic production of natural gas. These lowered costs mean improved bottom lines for commercial customers.

The research found by the AGA says that commercial consumption of natural gas is projected to increase through 2040. This fact, coupled with the facts that many of the U.S. commercial sector buildings are aging and energy costs are at historic lows means that this is the perfect time for commercial building owners to consider facility upgrades.
